More Tales From the Commute...

- I saw a lot of animals on the way down and then up the Capital Crescent today. I had to yell at a big fat doe to get it to move out of the way this morning. Then on the way back up, a red fox - the doggy thing, not the dead comedian - ran alongside me for a while. Then a wild turkey - the bird not the whiskey - was in the trail. Some days, I think I should bring a camera and shoot some pictures of these critters. Other days, like today, I think I should bring a shotgun and shoot some dinner.

- Who commutes in a skinsuit? A relatively fast triathlete I wheelsucked on this evening, apparently.

- The Cap Crescent has a stinky spot just past the boathouse, about a half mile up the trail near where Rock Creek passes under it. I rode up the trail about six weeks ago in a heavy rain and raw sewage was flooding over the trail. The area still smells godawful.

- The intersection of the trail with five corners up in Bethesda is incredibly dangerous since they 'fixed' the traffic flow. Any more fixes could be fatal.

- Do the people I pass on the Georgetown branch trail - a gravel path - think I'm weird if I bomb past them doing 25-28 MPH on a skinny tired street bike? There is no way I can go slow on that surface, any more than I can go slow on the occasional cobblestones in Georgetown or Annapolis. I think if anybody calls me on riding hazardously on the G-Town Branch. I'll just say that I race cyclocross, now leave me alone. Hey, I wonder what "I race cyclocross, now leave me alone" is in Flemish. [Update: According to Babelfish, it's something like "Ik ren cyclocross, verlaat alleen me nu." Sounds tough, eh?] Nobody can ever keep up except for this one Snow Valley guy. We both cackle like fools as we bomb down the gravel together. Fools hammer like madmen, where angels fear to tread...I haven't seen him in a while. He probably killed himself riding a skinny tired road bike down a gravel road somewhere. Hey, maybe we ought to send a patrol out to Poolesville...

- Blackburn System X-6 lights - a good light set at a really attractive price. The combination of wide & narrow angle lenses really lights up a trail. I think these are good enough to off-road with. I'll find out in a few weeks I guess, when I take the cross bike on some MTB trails. They aren't quite as bright as some $500 lights, but they are damn close, and sell for roughly half the price. I also like the smart charger that comes with them. Just plug them in when you get home, and forget about them.

- Random commuting thought of the day - I was worried about my cat Coppi going into the vet to get fixed tomorrow. He has a little bit of a heart murmur so going under anaesthesia will be dodgy for him. My second thought was, if you did that to me, I'd hate you forever. Hopefully, he isn't smart enough to figure out what we're about to do to him. Otherwise, it could be tough stuffing him into the cat carrier in the morning.

Here's a list of everything I've seen on my rides during October.

Yep. 12 miles on the velodrome doesn't throw up many surprises. Or much fitness.

I should think that if you keep going to the track without training, you should have no problem throwing up lots of things.

You need to get back on the bike, fatboy.

I'm consistent with doing sit ups. Half a one in the morning, and the other half when I lay back down at night.
